Although farming is hard work it is a fantastic industry to be involved in.

To see animals being born is special however many times the farmer has seen it happen and to see a wonderful field of ripened corn swaying in the summer breeze is equally rewarding.

There’s not many industries where those involved can look to the skies and see buzzards circling on the thermal air currents or look closer to ground and see little birds darting in and out of hedgerows. Look to floor level and you might see a Doormouse or water vole if you’re anywhere near some water. Look out into the fields at the right time of day or night and as well as seeing the farmed animals you might see deer, rabbits, hare or badger.

Farming’s not just about looking at what’s going on around the farm. There is a business side to it as well. Farmers need to produce as much wholesome, nutritious food as they can for all those people who need to be fed. Production needs to be sustainable and an appreciation of the environment in which the farmer operates is vitally important for this to be achieved.

There are many different ways of producing the food depending on what it is or where
it is being produced.

Next time you have something to eat it’s worth thinking about what went
into making it. Whatever it is, the first part of its production is invariably
linked to a farmer somewhere in the world.
