Differences between humans and other animals
Science Key Stage 1: Sc1. 1; 2a,b,e,g,h,j. Sc2. 1b; 2a,b,e; 5b,c.
Science Key Stage 2: Sc1. 1a; 2a,b,c,f,g,j,l Sc2. 1a,c; 4a,b,c; 5a,b.
Objectives: To understand that animals including humans, move, feed, grow, use their senses & reproduce. They all have different ways of accomplishing these tasks.
Methodology: Through observation & discussion this lesson looks at a variety of organisms close up & seeks out the differences & similarities between humans & other animals.
Key Words: Skeleton, backbone, feathers, comb, talons, carnivores, herbivores, dairy cattle, reproduction, invertebrate, aquatic, gills fins metamorphosis.
Skills & Concepts: Observation, make comparisons, make & record similarities & differences, ask questions, review work, work in cooperation with others.
Lesson Plan Classroom activity. Resources:
Timing: Activity - Allow 30 minutes
  1. Arrive, welcome, Health & Safety
  2. Trailer ride to observe & draw cattle. Differences from humans
  3. Break
  4. Divide into groups to observe owl, chickens, insects & calves
  5. Work with a partner not known to each other to devise a title for the day. Draw, with labels, animals of choice & explain to group
  6. Lunch (weather dependent)
  7. Play time activities supervised by teachers
  8. In 2 groups. Pond dipping & trailer ride to see areas of the farm according to choice & season. Swap activities
  9. Coach leaves
