Looking After Livestock
Farmers keep many types of livestock on farms. They include cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, llamas, chickens, turkeys, alpacas, fish and other more unusual animals like ostriches! The animals they farm are kept for meat, milk or wool production.
Within the different types of livestock kept there are many different types and breeds. For example, there are both dairy and beef cattle and within those types are many different breeds which are all different from each other. The same goes for all the other farmed animals.
As well as the farmed animals the farmer has others. Lots of farms have dogs. Sheep farmers have them to help herd their sheep whilst lots of others have them as guard dogs.
There are others like Farmer Nick who keep their dogs for company which means they are pets. You find cats on many farms. These help to make sure there aren’t too many mice on the farm but unfortunately they catch birds.
So, as well as the domesticated animals there is lots of wildlife. There are birds, badgers, foxes, snakes, insects and loads of other things that are hardly seen if you don’t keep your eyes open.
