| Objectives: To understand how to use a compass in order to read a map by recognising natural & man made features within the UK. | |
| Methodology: Exercises designed to familiarise pupils with the main directions & later to follow an orienteering course. The local OS map is used together with compasses in order to recognise local landmarks. | |

| Skills & Concepts: Work together to solve a problem & to support each member of a group, listen to & then follow instructions to learn a new skill, use a compass & align a map so that it faces north, identify landmarks & locate them on a map using a key & grid lines. | |
