Science Key Stage 1: Sc1. 1; 2a,b,e,f,g. Sc2. 1a,b,c; 2a,b,e,f. 5a,b,c.
Science Key Stage 2: Sc1. 1a,b; 2a,b,e,f,g,h,j. Sc2. 1a,b,c; 4a,b,c. 5a,b,c,d,e.
Objectives: To understand how to use a compass in order to read a map by recognising natural & man made features within the UK.
Methodology: Exercises designed to familiarise pupils with the main directions & later to follow an orienteering course. The local OS map is used together with compasses in order to recognise local landmarks.
Key Words: Compass, true & grid north, Ordnance Survey, grid lines, northings, eastings, key, scale, orienteering, align, landmarks, bird’s eye view.
Skills & Concepts: Work together to solve a problem & to support each member of a group, listen to & then follow instructions to learn a new skill, use a compass & align a map so that it faces north, identify landmarks & locate them on a map using a key & grid lines.

  1. Arrive, welcome & Health & Safety
  2. Familiarise pupils with compasses. Divide into groups of 5.
  3. Practice with compasses
  4. Break
  5. Trailer ride to a high point of the farm. Use local OS map & compasses to identify & name local landmarks.
  6. Introduce other aspects of map reading – gridlines, symbols, keys, use of colour, bird’s eye view.
  7. Lunch (venue weather dependent)
  8. Playtime activities supervised by teachers
