Materials
Science Key Stage 1: Sc1. 1; 2a,e,f,h. Sc3. 1a,b,c,d; 2a,b.

Objectives: To understand that the Earth is composed of materials many of which humans utilise in their everyday lives. Some materials are natural but others are man made from several different materials. Most materials are finite & will eventually run out.
Methodology: A tactile lesson in which pupils touch/smell materials in order to identify them. Pupils record how certain materials are used on the farm & they are classified according to their properties or uses.
Key Words: Materials, raw materials, natural, resource, manufacture, smelt, record, classify, float, transparent, opaque, rough, smooth.
Skills & Concepts: Observe, explore & ask questions, use senses as appropriate to recognise similarities & differences between materials, work in groups to make decisions & to make a simple classification of materials.
