Micro Organisms
Science Key Stage 1: Sc1.1; 2a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h. Sc2. 1a,b,c.
Science Key Stage 2: Sc1. 1a,b; 2a,b,c,d,e,f,g,j,k,l. Sc2. 1a,b,c; 4a,b,c. 5a,b,d,e,f.
Objectives: To understand the nature of micro organisms & the vital role they play in the food chain.
Methodology: By looking at materials in various stages of decay pupils realise that micro organisms are responsible for this decay & recognise some of the conditions needed by the organisms.
Key Words: Food chain, virus, bacteria, fungus, decompose, airtight, silage hay, humidity, microscopic, compost, nutrients, beneficial, harmful, disease, germs, allergy, thermometer, temperature
Skills & Concepts: Use of senses, working within a group to make decisions, recording &analysing evidence, asking questions & listening to other ideas. Micro organisms are too small to see. They may be beneficial or harmful.

Activity
  1. Arrival, welcome & Health & Safety.
  2. Discussion to define micro organism
  3. Use of senses (smell& touch) to recognise various decomposing foods.
  4. Short break
  5. In groups pupils take temperatures in places where micro organisms may be at work. These are recorded.
  6. Groups discuss results & recognise similarities & differences.
  7. Lunch (venue according to weather)
  8. Play activities for pupils supervised by school staff.
  9. Pond dipping activity.
  10. Summing up of the day’s findings.
