| Objectives: To understand that Britain has been settled by successive groups each of which established their own patterns of living. Remnants of these can still be seen today. Romans lived on the Mendips & archaeology reveals evidence of their lifestyle. | |
| Methodology: Students experience the atmosphere on top of the Mendip Hills & recognise limestone scenery. By using an OS map they can read where Roman remains are & recognise them in real life. They also see evidence of old industrial activity & try to understand the harsh working conditions especially for children. | |
| Key Words: Legionnaires, fort, amphitheatre, lead, smelting, pottery shards, child labour, archaeology, site, interpretation, AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). | |
| Skills & Concepts: Changing landscapes, map reading, evidence from the past, using archaeological evidence to understand the past, walking in the open country & being aware of the Mendips as an AONB, asking question, care for the countryside. | |
