Streams and Ponds
Science Key Stage 1: Sc1. 1; 2a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j. Sc2. 1a,b,c; 2b; 5a,b,c. Sc4. 2a,c.
Science Key Stage 2: Sc1. 1a,b; 2a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l,m. Sc2. 1a,b,c; 3a,d; 4a,b,c; 5a,b,c,d,e. Sc4. 2c.
Objectives: To investigate the organisms that live in still water (ponds) & flowing water (streams) & to make comparisons between them. Students also look at the work of streams & how & why their physical characteristics may change. The general care for water resources is also studied.
Methodology: Ponds. Pond dipping at various places & the use of keys to identify organisms & their lifecycles. Streams. Kick sampling & dipping. Comparisons are made between pond & stream life. Measurements to find out the width, depth & velocity of the stream at various points.
Key Words: Organisms, metamorphosis, lifecycle, erosion, transportation, deposition, velocity, pollution, meander, flow.
Skills & Concepts: Use geographical & scientific language, observe & record, use fieldwork skills, follow instructions, make comparisons, check observations/measurements by repeating them as appropriate.

Activity
  1. Coach arrives
  2. Introduction, welcome, Health & Safety
  3. Divide into 2 large groups & then groups of 4 or 5.
  4. Group 1. Pond dipping & identification of species. Discuss the main features of the pond & its surroundings. Sketch with labels.
  5. Group 2. Measure aspects of the stream & record results on relevant sheets. Stream dipping to identify species. Sketch of stream & labels.
  6. Lunch (venue weather dependent)
  7. Play activities supervised by teachers.
  8. Discuss findings in groups & present results to the rest of the group.
