KS1 &2 Science based farm visits.

Working in partnership with Alvis Brothers and Farmlink the Industrial Trust, the National leader in the provision of out of classroom curriculum linked activities, can arrange and subject to conditions potentially fund your next STEM based visit.
Trees
Science Key Stage 1: Sc1. 1a; 2a,b,c,e,f,h,i,j. Sc2. 3a,b,c; 5a,c.
Science Key Stage 2: Sc1. 1a;,b; 2a,b,c,d,e,f,h,i,j,k,l,m; 4a,c.
Objectives: To understand that trees grow at different rates depending on growing conditions & the species of the tree. Aspects of the tree’s growth can be measured. Trees perform a vital role in our environment – to climate, people & other creatures. Therefore they need respect & care.
Methodology: Very much a find out for yourself lesson based on measuring , recording & interpreting results. Pupils learn how our climate is affected by trees and how they are used by humans & other creatures.
Key Words: Native, species, root system, oxygen, carbon dioxide, crown, circumference, metre, height, annual rings, division, atmosphere, global warming.
Skills & Concepts: Measuring & interpretation, use of compass, recording, working within a group, using simple scientific equipment, make a fair test by changing 1 factor & measuring the effect, check observations by repeating them, draw conclusions, recognise limitation/implications.
Lesson Plan Classroom activity. Resources:
Activity
  1. Arrive, welcome, Health & Safety
  2. Discuss role of trees. Divide into groups of 5.Explain work Show how to use compasses
  3. Break
  4. Work in wood near house. Each group member has a task & they must swap tasks.
  5. Find out the north & south sides of the woods. Complete the survey recording sheets
  6. Discuss results, limitation & conclusions.
  7. Lunch (weather dependent)
  8. Play time activities supervised by teachers.
  9. Find ‘veteran’ trees. Calculate the age of a tree (tree rings) & a tree’s height (2 ways)
  10. Role play to illustrate plants & animals dual part in atmosphere.
