Year of food and farming

The Year of Food and Farming (YoFF) and Think Food and Farming

The Year of Food and Farming (YoFF) was an industry run initiative which aimed to get children more interested and educated about where their food came from and what needed to be done to it before consumption. The Year ran from September 2007 to July 2008 and was open to all schools across the country. It is estimated that over 300,000 children participated in the South West of England through the course of the Year being hosted by a network of farmers across the region. Efforts are being made to continue the initiative through its successor – Think Food and Farming.

FarmLink are working closely with FACE delivering Think Food and Farming in the region on an ongoing basis.

Think Food and Farming

Think Food and Farming (TFF) is the exciting legacy project building on the successes of the Year of Food and Farming. It promotes healthy living by offering children and young people direct experience of the countryside, farming and food through growing and cooking activities, and visits to farms.

The aim of Think Food and Farming is much the same as FarmLink’s – that is why FarmLink works closely with FACE to deliver the programme. The basic aims of Think Food and Farming are to;
Improve the understanding of young people, their parents and teachers, of the food chain and the role played by farming.
Develop curriculum materials and projects on food and farming which can be used in schools both during and beyond the Year.
Increase links between schools, farmers and food producers, which will be sustainable well beyond the Year.
Raise awareness of the contribution food can make to a healthy lifestyle, and within this increase the understanding amongst children of what constitutes a healthy and balanced diet.
Raise awareness of the career opportunities in the food and farming industries.
Increase understanding of the importance of the countryside and environmental issues related to food and farming.
